Location Guide ~ Slovenia
The beautiful country of Slovenia has something for everyone. A
diverse country, situated just below Austria, it is famous
for its ski region in the North West and its fairytale lake
- Lake Bled. Slovenia's capital town Ljubljana is a vibrant
modern city and its surrounding countryside is fast gaining
a reputation for producing excellent wines.
Slovenia also enjoys a warm coastline on the Adriatic Sea next to Italy and is fast becoming a popular destination since becoming part of the EU.

The Porhoje
Massif and Maribor Skiing and hiking
are popular in the Pohrje Massif region. Rogla
and Porhorje are judged to be two of the best
ski and snowboard resorts in the country.
Maribor
is Slovenia's second city of culture, commerce and
education, lying in the eastern foothills of the Pohorje
Massif. Maribor hosts a great range of festivals and
events, the most prominent being the Lent Festival
which lasts for two weeks between June and July.
Slovenia's oldest town is Ptuj which is located 26km southeast of Maribor, a very appealing area with over two thousand years of history.
Kranj and the Kamniske-Savinjske Alps Kranj lies at the confluence of the Sava and Kokra Rovers and is Slovenia's fourth largest city. While mainly an industrial centre, it does possess an attractive old quarter. Brdo Castle lies 4km northeast of Kranj and is the country's most beautiful and elite presidential residence.
This regions highlight is the beautiful Logarska
Dolina (Logo Valley), in the heart of the Kamniske-
Savinjske Alps which stretching some 7km long.
Walking, horse-riding, rock climbing and cycling are
among some of the leisure pursuits on offer.
At the head of the valley, the 90m high Rinka waterfall is a sight not to be missed. Most of the majestic peaks top 2000m and border lush meadows and forests, with the lower Savinga valley being known primarily as the 'valley of hops'.
At the heart of this landscape lies Celje home of the 'Counts of Celje' who, in the middle ages, were one of central Europe's foremost ruling dynasties. The 12th century castle acquired a 14th century make-over during their rule, and this large fortification sits 2km above and southeast of the town. Bordering the city lies the Smartinsko Jezero lake which is the largest reservoir in Slovenia. Spa towns dominate this region with Rogaska Slatina and Olimia being the most popular.
Pohorje The best way to explore Slovenia's 'bread basket' is by bike. This flat landscape lies in the eastern tip of the country, bordered in the south by the Mura River and by Austria, Hungary and Croatia. It is also the largest agricultural region in Slovenia. Many visitors are attracted by the thermal health resorts, a few being Radenci and Banovci health resorts, Therme 3000, and Lendava thermal spa. Healthy living also extends to the regions culinary delights and excellent wines.
