Location Guide ~ Lake Balaton in Hungary
Lake Balaton is a little over 100km south east
of Budapest. It is the largest lake in Central
Europe. Since Hungary is landlocked, Lake
Balaton is sometimes called the "Hungarian
Sea".
- Lake Balaton ~ Sometimes called the Hungarian Sea
The average water temperature
during the summer is 25° C, which makes bathing and swimming
very enjoyable. Other tourist attractions include sailing,
fishing and other water sports as well as visiting the countryside
and hills; wineries on the north coast and night life on
the south.
Although the peak season at the lake is summer, it is also worth
visiting the huge lake in winter, when you can go fishing in the
ice-holes, or if the ice is thick enough, skate, sledge or ice-sail.
Lake Balaton is
primarily a summer
holiday destination,
but the people who
came to laze on the
beach often overlook
the fact that some
excellent winegrowing
country surrounds
them. Four wine
producing regions
share the shores of
the lake,
Balatonfelvidek
(the
Balaton uplands), Balatonfured-Csopak, Badacsony on
the hilly north shore and Balatonboglar to the
flatter south. The tabletop volcano of Badacsony offers a number of delicious
white wines to go with the spectacular views of Lake Balaton.
In the area near Balatonboglar is a large wine region on the
southern shores of Lake Balaton. Some very good wines are
grown here. The Legli Winery welcomes visitors for sampling.
There is also an official wine route that makes it easy to try the
wines of a number of different wine growers in a single day.
Hungary is afloat on a rich reservoir of thermal
water that breaks the surface through
thousands of springs, and the Balaton region
has more than its fair share of them. As well as
enjoying a warming soak, you can also take
advantage of a wide range of health and beauty
treatments - from massages and mudpacks to
physiotherapy and dental work. Put yourself in
the hands of the qualified experts, and allow
them to soothe your body and mind.
The thermal centres at Kehidakustany and
Zalakaros are open whatever the season, and
are suitable for the whole family. Parents can
indulge in treatments while the kids splash
about in the 'fun bath'. Zalakaros is
recommended for the relief of arthritis thanks to
a combination of medicinal baths and
generations of expertise.
Balatonfüred-Csopak lies
on the north eastern shore of the lake and includes the
beautiful Tihany peninsula. Thatched roof cottages line
the narrow lanes of the old hill-top village, first
established in 1055 as a burial-place for the
royal family and famous for its Benedictine
Monastery, the foundation documents of which
contained the first written record of the
Hungarian language. The peninsula also
provides
excellent views
of the
surrounding
lake.
Lake Balaton has a surface
area of 592 km2 and it extends
for 77 km along the southern
foothills of the Bakony
Mountains of Hungary. The
Zala River provides the largest
inflow of water to the lake, and
the canalised Sió is the only
outflow.
