Location Guide ~ Budapest in Hungary

Budapest's districts are numbered clockwise, in widening circles, similar to the districts of Paris. There are 23 districts - 6 in Buda, 16 in Pest and 1 on an island Csepel between them. Each district can be associated with one or more city parts named after former towns within Budapest. Some of the main ones are:
Budapest, The Districts

District 1: the historical site in Buda on the western side, around the Castle, with buildings going back to the 17th century, most of them historical monuments.
District 2: a hilly district in the northwest, including the famous 'Rose Hill', maybe the most chic residential area of Buda.
District 3: Óbuda (Old Buda) is the oldest and second largest Budapest district, stretching along the northernmost part of Buda.
District 4: is in Pest, the northeastern side, residential and industrial area.
District 5
: the inner City of Budapest: in the centre of Pest, banks, office buildings, 'prestige' shops, the famous pedestrian Váci Street, the House of Parliament, St. Stephen's Cathedral, galleries, antiquity shops, theatres, cultural amenities.
District 6: is in Pest, its mainline is the beautiful Andrássy Avenue with the old Budapest underground beneath. Beautiful century old buildings including the Opera House.
District 7: is in Pest, its main road being Rakoczy Avenue. It is known for its night clubs, and also hosts the Jewish district with Central Europe's largest synagogue.

District 8: is near the centre of Pest, its main line is the 'big' boulevard with century old houses and theatres.
District 9: is next to the Danube River in Pest, with many new developments, including the new Hungarian National Theatre and a multifunction Cultural Centre.
District 10: is in Pest on the outskirts, another mainly industrial area.
District 11: is in new Buda close to the M1 national motorway towards Western Europe, a residential district characterised by Bauhaus style buildings.
District 12: is the largest residential area in the east of Buda, greenery and woods cover the Buda Hills, ideal for nature walks and tranquility after the busy city centre. You can ski at Normafa, when there is some snow in the winter, and in summer it is a perfect location to relax and take in the view.
District 13: is in the north of Pest, and is a former industrial area.
District 21: lies on an island called Csepel.

Hungary is certainly one of the most developed and forward thinking of the former Eastern Bloc countries and with EU support it will undoubtedly grow stronger.
