Location Guide ~ Bansko in Bulgaria
The
picturesque small country known as Bulgaria has existed for
more than 13 centuries, linking East and Western
Europe. Often known
as the Eden of Europe, this ancient and beautiful
natural landscape has a favourable climate with
hospitality that is second to none.
- Tordoka Mountain • Pinn • Bania resort • Bansko
The Tordoka
mountain top, where the ski slopes of the
resort begin, is Bulgaria's number one ski resort and
is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. It has the
most
modern ski centre of
all the Bulgarian resorts and a sizeable investment has been made to develop
Bansko into a favourite ski and snowboard
destination. There is a hugely varied landscape to
choose from in this region, from 3000m high
mountains to the golden sands of the Black Sea Coast.
There are warm sunny beaches for the summer
months, and deep snow among the pine forest for
winter skiing, usually within just a few hours drive
from each other.
Bansko is the newest Bulgarian winter resort, only
recently discovered by us here in the UK, and
therefore it is relatively unspoilt by over development.
It is situated near the Glazane River in the
northeastern foot of Pinn below the highest and
most beautiful part of the mountain. The resort has excellent
snow conditions and cover, well-groomed tree-lined slopes, and the skiing
season continues from the middle of December to the middle of April.
The slopes offer runs and tracks for all types of skiers
and will suit both
beginners and experts There is an
efficient and modern lift infrastructure, and a 5km
cross -country track.
There is also probably the only
ice skating rink in Bulgaria, that converts into a tennis
court in the summer. Accommodation is modern and of a high
standard, with many hotels offering a full range of facilities.
There are over 130 architectural
and historical
monuments, of culture in the area, the city having
one of the best museum networks in the country. The
atmosphere here is a charming mix of the ancient and natural.
The village at the heart of Bansko has a good selection of 'mehanas' -
traditional Bulgarian pubs - where you can
enjoy the warm hospitality,
food and live music in front of a blazing fire. In the old
town there are disco clubs and intimate cafes as well as
local shops for souvenirs. Not to be outdone by the
winter, in the summer Bansko is the host of the
traditional Summer Jazz Festival, Bulgarian folk
Festival wine tasting and many other cultural events.
Only 4km from Bansko is the Bania resort with
more then 50 mineral springs, just some of Bulgaria's 550
health giving waters.
